Armenia: Planting Seeds of Change with WFP
Through a project supported by Stop Hunger and implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP), schools in the Shirak region are transforming outdoor spaces into living classrooms, where children learn how to grow food, care for plants, and understand the value of healthy nutrition.
What was once land used for temporary school structures after the 1988 earthquake has been revitalised into an intensive school garden, now becoming a vibrant hub for both the school and the wider community. The initiative combines education, sustainability, and food security through:
- School gardens where students plant, water, and care for crops
- Solar panels powering warmer classrooms and sustainable energy
-
Drip irrigation and rainwater harvesting systems supporting resilient agriculture
Beyond the harvest, students gain knowledge, confidence, and a deeper connection to the food they eat. Because when children learn how food grows, communities grow stronger too.
